Looking at the difficulties that I had trying to get the system only of a 1 TB disk to put onto a smaller SSD drive. I bought a Samsung 240 GB drive and I wanted to move the systems so that I could benefit from the really fast launch times of applications. The faster bootup time doesn't really affect me as I tend to leave my computer running all of the time.
I could have probably done some more reading before I got started to find out how other people have sorted this problem out successfully. I thought I would be able to use the application SuperDuper, but that would only Let me clone the whole disk when I just needed a part of it. So I got a trial version of the application CarbonCopyCloner and that did the trick by letting me choose the parts that I didn't want and stopped them from being cloned.
Before I started all of this, of course I did several backups so that if everything went tits up I would be able to restore back to the original drive and try again. At the moment I am without a Time Machine backup as the drive has completely failed. But I am completely confident on the full clone backup I have made with Superduper.
I did make an attempt to use the Apple tool called Migration Assistant, but that didn't work out for me. I think what I needed to do was to boot from the SSD first and then gets migration assistant to bring the stuff across. I toyed with the idea of trying again with the application but in the end I found I didn't need it.
Just about everything is working now. There were one or two things that I had to move around and fiddle with, such as the working files for DragonDictate and for text expander. So now I can just enjoy the extra speed I get by using a solid state drive on my iMac connected by Thunderbolt.
