The prominent Danish philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) is considered a forerunner of existentialism. Furthermore, his ideas directly influenced Karl Barth's "dialectical theology," philosophical anthropology, personalism, and other movements that emphasize the personal appropriation of truth. Kierkegaard's "The Sickness Unto Death" was published in July 1849.
The thematic introduction, which gives the book its title, is based on the Gospel parable of the raising of Lazarus. The miracle of Lazarus carries its own transparent metaphorical load: the breathlessness, the lifelessness of the dead man symbolize here the numbness of the human will, fettered by despair, when hope is lost and everything is drowning in the darkness of indifference, cynical emptiness.
