Dragunov Upgrade: retrofit system by SSS Defence

Designed in the late 1950s, The Dragunov Sniper Rifle also called as DSR by the Indian Army is a legendary gas-operated short-stroke piston rifle chambering 7.62×54mm rounds. Indian Army had started the procurement of Dragunov in 1990s. The Army has been one of the largest users of the DSR and estimates the total number of weapons in service at between 5000-7000. For Snipers Indian Army has always preferred Dragunov instead of moving to an entirely new system. Though Army have been procuring western sniper rifles in limited quantity for specialised units and operations which includes 220 Galil Sniper, 30 Scorpio TGT Sniper, 100 M107A1 & few SAKO TRG 42 rifles.
Why Dragunov needs to be upgraded
While Dragunov served the purpose as a sniper rifle over many years with its effective range around 800 metres, it has slowly fallen behind contemporary sniper rifles that have night fighting capability, improved sights and mounts that have not only increased accuracy but also the strike range to over 1 km. At the same time the mission criteria and nature of operations has changed over the last couple of decades but the weapon in itself has not undergone “Special Operations modifications." The lack of upgrades for the DSR so far creates very apparent limitations and for a modern-day Indian army and these could turn out very costly.
Upgrade options for Dragunov: Kalashnikov
Indian army has two options for the upgrade of Dragunov. The first one is from Russian firm Kalashnikov and the second one is from Indian pvt. Sector firm SSS Defence.
The Kalashnikov Group has offered a broad range of solutions to upgrade the SVD platform which includes an “effective muzzle brake/flash suppressor,” which increases the rifle’s accuracy and balance. Additionally, “the weapon’s handguard and pistol grip are made of polymer. The folding buttstock features an adjustable backplate and cheek rest. It also includes a Picatinny rail, a mounting platform to install accessories. These optional attachments include optical and night sights, a silencer, an extra mechanical sight, and a mount for folding bipods, allowing the user to quickly adjust the weapon according to their requirements.
Kalashnikov has said that only it has the rights to certify upgrades to the Indian Dragunovs and its offer includes training of troops and workshop personnel to carry out work at the unit level itself.

However, the upgrade programme is in the negative import list put out by the defence ministry in August 2020 with cut-off date as December 2020. This paves the way for indigenous upgrade from SSS Defence. The company offers 5 modifications to the sniper rifle. The front rail modification includes picatinny rail for mounting optics made up of hard ionized mild steel aluminium weighing 260gm. It will also feature integrated rear rail made up of hard ionized mild steel aluminium weighing 150gm. It features light weight buttstock. It offers muzzle break/flash suppressor for better accuracy & balance. And the last one is a quick detachable bipod. It is made up of rugged, high strength material that includes a fusion of mil-spec aluminium, stainless steel and polymer making it extremely strong and at the same time lighter. Overall, The SSS Defence DSR Upgrade Kit improves aesthetics, ergonomics, maintenance & operations while keeping the reliable parts of the original weapon intact. 100% designed and developed in India, the Dragunov retrofit system is ready for testing with its MRO facility at Bengaluru.
