Enhance Details in Lightroom - Does it work?
In February 2019, Adobe released Lightroom version 8.2 and an upgrade to Photoshop Camera RAW. This update was significant as it contained the new Enhance Details feature, effectively a new RAW converter for Lightroom and Photoshop. In this tutorial, I look at what’s so special about the Lightroom Enhance Details feature, how to use it and answer the burning question: does it work?
Enhance Details is a significant upgrade for Fuji photographers, and for the first time, Lightroom has special routines for processing XTrans RAW files. These routines can better understand the XTrans data and produce realistic detail from Fuji RAW files. At least, that’s what Adobe claims. Adobe also claims the new routine resolves much more detail than the existing RAW converter. That’s why I want to check if this is really true by processing several test Fuji RAW files.
Because of the way the Enhance Details feature works in Lightroom, if you haven’t heard about it, then you aren’t using it. This isn’t something you can’t just switch on and off in Lightroom. Instead, it requires you to deliberately process individual RAW files, generating a second version of each. Even if you aren’t a Fuji user, Adobe claims the Enhance Details feature will improve RAW files from all Bayer sensor cameras. If they are right, this is well worth knowing about.
