Canon has released Firmware Version 1.2.0 for the EOS R5 Mark II.
I’m Kolbassia Haoussou, filmmaker and photographer behind KH CAMS, and I didn’t rush to review this update.

Instead, I tested the firmware extensively in real-world shooting conditions in Kuala Lumpur and Geneva before sharing my findings.

In this video, I break down what Canon says this update improves — and a serious issue I discovered during testing that every R5 Mark II owner should be aware of.

What Canon states Firmware 1.2.0 improves:
• EOS Multi Remote support
• Fix for distorted live-view and Err70 during dark multi-exposure shooting
• Fix for FTP transfer error (Err41)
• Fix for CFexpress card formatting issues
• General system stability improvements

What I observed during real-world testing:
• Extremely noisy live-view in low-light standby
• Noise disappears only after pressing record
• 120fps slow-motion footage becomes heavily noisy and close to unusable
• Camera failed twice to recognise the Canon RF 15–35mm f/2.8 L lens
• Online firmware update process felt slow and unreliable
• Battery drain appears faster (requires further long-term testing)

To confirm this was not a broader Canon issue, I tested the R5 Mark II, R5 C, and C80 side by side using:
• RF 35mm at f/2.8
• ISO 800
• XF-AVC 8K on R5 Mark II & R5 C
• 4K on C80
• Official Canon LP-E6P batteries

Result: Only the R5 Mark II showed this behaviour.
Both the R5 C and C80 remained clean and stable.

This strongly suggests a firmware-specific issue affecting the R5 Mark II.

If you regularly shoot in low light or rely on 120fps slow motion, this is something you should carefully consider before updating.

Community question (R5 Mark II owners)

Have you updated to Firmware 1.2.0?
Are you seeing similar noise behaviour or lens recognition issues?
