Here I present a series of photographs of the resort city of Alupka on the Crimean Peninsular, located 17 km (11mi) to the west of Yalta.
Alupka was originally a Greek settlement. The name originates from the Greek word for fox (Alopex) . After the Greeks, Alupka came under control of the Byzantine Empire and was first mentioned in 960. Later the city was controlled by the Crimean Tartars. After the Crimean campaigns, the city came into possession of Grigori Alexandrovich Potemkin, governor-general of the Novorossiya Krai. Mikhail Vorontsov, the Governor-General of New Russia, as thje southern provinces of Russia were known, built a palace here bwtween 1828 and 1848 as his summer residence.....
At the end of 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, Alupka was a famous resort.......
