What's happening?
Unprecedented deforestation. In the time it takes to watch this video around 372 acres of forest will have been cut down. An area the size of England is felled every year.
Why?
This is mainly due to the conversion of forests to agricultural land (mostly to sustain the meat and dairy industry), logging, overgrazing, unmitigated shifting cultivation, unsustainable forest management, introduction of invasive alien plant and animal species, infrastructure development (roads, hydro-electrical development, urban sprawl), mining, oil exploitation and anthropogenic forest fires.
What's the problem?
Loss of biodiversity, loss of carbon sinks & increased climate change, soil erosion, water cycle disruption, indigenous land rights and livelihoods destroyed. These are very big problems, for all humans and for all life on earth.
What can we do?
Donate to charity, raise awareness, shop carefully, volunteering, recycle, ecotourism? These things may help but if we starve the industries responsible for deforestation then they'll either have to change their business models or go out of business. Leave Babylon; live sustainably, live self-sufficiently, or if you feel you can't do that then choose carefully what you consume, wage war with your wallet and remove your hand from the mouth of the beast.
Apart from that I really don't know what to do? It's daunting. Meanwhile, I'm just gonna make music.
