Each form consists of surfaces.
In this case, we have a cube, and it consists of certain surfaces.
Let's call these surfaces, for example, "side", here they are, the "upper" surface, and the "lower" surface on which it stands.
Depending on how these surfaces are facing the light, in general on any figure, not only on a cube, but on any, the lighting of the entire figure depends on this.
If we have a surface directed towards the light, as in this case this surface, it is directed towards the light, it is completely illuminated, and it becomes the lightest. This surface is directed less towards the light than this surface, so it is darker entirely. But this surface turns away from the light, so it is completely immersed in shadow.
On the cube, the surfaces change very abruptly, that is, we have one such flat surface, here it is, and once it abruptly changes direction, and goes in this direction.
That is, these side faces of the cube, they abruptly changed direction, this one is directed completely towards the light, and here it abruptly changed direction, and abruptly turned away from the light, so it abruptly went completely into shadow.
In this case, this surface of the cube is directed most towards the light, in relation to these surfaces, so it is the lightest. These surfaces turn away from the light source, so they are darker.
If we leave the light source in place, but rotate the cube, look what happens. The surface that was dark and was here, it moved here, and turned towards the light source, it became the lightest. And these surfaces, they became dark.
