Venice is a sinking city, but the uneven pressures on its buildings are opening cracks here and there, and especially in one of the most famous architectural structures of the world, crossed by millions of tourists every year – The Rialto Bridge. Staring from the earliest history of the city, the documentary takes the viewer on a journey through the meandering canals, looking at fashion, culture and archaeology to see how the city was built and is to be saved.
This documentary special tells the whole story of Venice, from its maritime republic beginnings to the ground-breaking renovation underway of Rialto Bridge. This two-part series shows how fashion, archaeology and culture are coming together for an epic renovation of one of the most famous bridges in the world. The controversial impact of big cruise ships, global climate change and other threats to the Venice lagoon are covered in depth, as is the engineering behind a 7 billion euro project to build a massive underwater surge barrier that rises out of the sea when high tides threaten to flood the ancient city.
