Central hepatectomy surgery | health video | health tips | Dr.Satish Pawar | Surgical Oncologist | Kaizen Hematology Oncology Network
Central hepatectomy, also known as central bisegmentectomy, is a surgical procedure in which the central portion of the liver, called the caudate lobe, is removed. This is usually done to treat liver tumors or cysts located in this area. The caudate lobe is in the center of the liver and is responsible for many essential functions, including detoxification, metabolism, and energy storage.
Now, you may be wondering why someone would need to have this portion of their liver removed. Well, the most common reason is the presence of tumors or cysts in the caudate lobe. These growths can be benign or cancerous, and their removal is crucial in preventing further spread or damage to the liver.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and the surgeon makes an incision in the upper abdomen to access the liver. The caudate lobe is then identified and separated from the surrounding tissue before being removed. This is a delicate procedure that requires great precision and expertise from the surgeon.
After the removal of the caudate lobe, the remaining healthy liver tissue is carefully reconnected and closed, and the incision is closed with stitches. The surgery typically takes around 2-3 hours, and the patient is then monitored in the recovery room for a few hours before being transferred to a regular hospital room.
As with any surgery, there are risks involved, including bleeding, infection, and damage to other organs. However, these risks are relatively low, and the benefits of this surgery often outweigh them.
The recovery period after a central hepatectomy may take a few weeks, and during this time, the patient will need to follow a specific diet and avoid strenuous activities. The liver is a highly regenerative organ, and the remaining lobe will continue to grow and take over the functions of the removed portion
