Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678–1741) was a great Italian composer, conductor, and music teacher. He was a prominent figure in violin playing during the first half of the 18th century. Vivaldi's biography, filled with memorable moments, reveals him to be a strong, versatile, and goal-oriented individual.
The four-concert cycle "Four Seasons," written during the Baroque period, became Antonio Vivaldi's most famous work. "The Four Seasons," or "Winter," is Concerto No. 4 of the Italian master's celebrated work, "Four Seasons."
In the sonnet that concludes the cycle, Antonio Vivaldi brilliantly describes the beginning of winter, when people first shiver in the cold, then warm themselves by the hearth and rejoice as they skate on the frozen ice. Winter has arrived, blanketing nature in snow and freezing the lakes, but even in its quest to freeze everything and everyone, people find joy. The quiet, calm, and soothing melody inspires reflection, reverie, and the savage breath of the north wind, echoing through the solo violin.
