I paid a quick visit to the grave of Mabel Tolkien, the mother of J. R. R. Tolkien. Born in Birmingham, England in January 1870, she tutored her young son, nurturing his love of faith, calligraphy and creative writing. Mabel died in November 1904 in Rednal, Birmingham from complications of Diabetes and her final resting place at St Peter’s Catholic Church in Bromsgrove is marked by a simple Celtic cross.
