The main element of a circuit breaker is a direct-acting relay, designed as:
1. A cutoff or electromagnetic tripping device. In the standard version, the cutoff device is a solenoid whose core is pulled in when the current increases. Today, electronic and microprocessor-based tripping devices are used instead of solenoid devices, providing ultra-fast circuit opening;
2. A thermal release, which is a bimetallic strip that bends when heated. In some circuit breaker models, the thermal release function is a cutoff device; in this case, the device is equipped with a hydraulic delay device.
