Tumor and Cancer - What is the Difference?
A tumor (Latin "to swell"), also known as neoplasm is an abnormal mass of a tissue which may be solid or fluid filled. A tumor does not necessarily mean cancer.
Tumors can be of two types:
1. Benign tumor: which are "non-progressive" and the growth is limited to the primary site of the body and it "cannot metastasize". Benign tumors can be removed surgically.
2. Malignant tumor: are those which can spread from it primary site to other sites of the body and malignant tumors are "cancerous" because they can "metastasize".
Cancer is a uncontrolled proliferation of a cell and not all cancers are characterised by the appearance of tumor. For example, blood cancer (leukemia) does not involve the appearance of tumor.
When a tumor is detected, it is very important that a biopsy is done in order to determine if the growth is benign or malignant.
Therefore, tumor and cancer are not one and the same. A tumor can be benign (non cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) whereas cancer is a malignant condition which might not involve appearance of tumor.
