When I visited the Peruvian historic city of Cusco I saw rainbow flags everywhere. What is the history behind Cusco's rainbow flag?
Cusco was the former capital of the Inca Empire that today serves as an attractive tourist attraction in Peru. Also due to the proximity of Machu Picchu. Cusco's flag features seven vibrant colors, inspired by the Aymaran wiphala representing some native peoples of the Andes. The seven colors represent chakras in the human body as well as the elements. The Cusco rainbow flag was introduced in 1973 due to its popularity. In 2021 the Echenique's golden sun was added.
Recently the flag had gained contention because some feel it represents the LGBTIQ+ community. Although the recent flag of thís community differs from the Cusco flag due to its recent alterations.
