FSR 4 a Transformer Model?!
Will FSR 4 match DLSS 4 and be a transformer model or will it be a CNN model (like DLSS 2 and 3)? People seem to assume it will be a convolutional neural network, because that's how Nvidia started with DLSS 2/3, but transformer models didn't exist back then!
Nowadays, transformer models are very popular. Granted, other models like XeSS and PSSR are still CNN based models, like DLSS 2. But FSR 4 is set to be exclusive to RDNA 4 GPUs like the AMD RX 9070 XT, which is rumored to feature FP8 acceleration in addition to the INT8 acceleration available on the PS5 Pro.
If FSR 4 is a CNN based model, it could possibly still leverage attention mechanisms inspired by transformer models using some more lightweight mechanism. This could hypothetically enable image quality gains similar to the transformer version of DLSS (DLSS 4).
