"Brazil is not a Wild West," says Dino after the Chamber session was interrupted by confusion
Minister Flávio Dino (Justice and Public Security) stated this Tuesday (April 11, 2023) that far-right representatives "only want violence" and not a "serious debate" with the government. The minister was called a "shirk" by congressmen after the meeting of the Public Security and Organized Crime Committee was closed due to arguments between representatives.
"The people here, these far-right representatives, don't want a serious debate; they only want violence and aggression. And that's why the chairman [of the committee, Representative Sanderson] decided to close the session," the minister said in an interview with reporters.
At the meeting, Dino stated that a new decree on firearms in Brazil should be finalized in May. The text will be submitted by the ministry for review by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party) in the first half of May. According to him, the new rule will resume suspended activities, such as the opening of shooting ranges.
"Regarding guns, which is their biggest concern, we are enforcing the law. It's not possible for everyone to have a gun in their hand to go out and kill others. Brazil isn't a Wild West. These people are getting heated because they are violent people. They want guns to go out and shoot in the middle of the street, as has unfortunately happened, including to representatives," Dino said.
