Olympic skaters perform impressive spins and jump with incredible control. From the outside, one might think that there would be a lot of mathematics involved, but what we don't realize as much until recently is that while they are spinning they are actually changing their posture mathematically so that they can make their rotations. MATLAB is used to simulate a skater's skating, guiding the skater around a curve by changing her optimal angles, positions and velocities. The entire model is built inside MATLAB and uses rigid body dynamics. The position of the skater is determined using simple kinematic equations. These are more accurate than the standard linear equations used on many skating simulators.
