Before the war and the Iron Curtain, foreigners emigrated en masse to the USSR. Some were offered jobs, some were disillusioned with capitalism, and others simply wanted to start a new life in a new country. Frenchwoman Andrée Centorens was one of the latter.

In Paris, she married a Soviet diplomat, gave birth to a son, and was absolutely happy. Andrée moved to Moscow in 1930—and quickly realized she had romanticized the Soviet Union. It wasn't just the hunger and endless lines. Andrée was arrested and spent 17 years in camps and exile. She narrowly escaped death many times. She witnessed and endured an incredible amount of violence. But she managed to remain herself.
