Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous rampage, its creator, Gemma, has become an advocate for government oversight of AI. Unbeknownst to her, a defense contractor has created a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate infiltration spy. However, as Emlia's self-awareness increases, it becomes less interested in taking orders. Hoping to stop Emilia, Gemma decides to resurrect M3GAN, making it faster, stronger, and more lethal.
When Fin Design & Effects jumped into M3GAN 2.0, the goal was clear: raise the bar. A crew of more than 100 artists delivered close to 800 shots (including 350 full CG), using almost every trick in the VFX playbook.
The biggest challenge? M3GAN herself. For the sequel, she received a full upgrade: new faces, new costumes, even a robotic undersuit. Because the animatronic puppet was rebuilt for the shoot, Fin Design & Effects had to rebuild all digital assets from scratch — essentially creating a brand-new pipeline for a brand-new doll.
She wasn’t limited to one version either. Sometimes she was actor Amy Donald, sometimes a stunt double, sometimes animatronic or doll, and many times a fully CG double. In numerous shots, she was a seamless combination of all of these. Even her now-famous dance was reimagined in CG, enhanced with motion capture from a professional “pop and lock” dancer to give it an even more robotic edge.
M3GAN wasn’t alone, though. Fin Design & Effects also introduced AMELIA, her sleek rival. From glowing eyes to sparks and battle damage, the final showdown between the two robots became one of the most complex set pieces — blending face swaps, energy effects, and layers of fine detail to sell the chaos.
Even small fixes added impact. The on-set motherboard prop wasn’t quite working, so Fin Design & Effects gave it a complete digital makeover — turning it into a more intricate and cinematic moment without requiring reshoots.
The schedule was intense, with late reshoots adding extra work just six weeks before delivery. Tools like Unreal Engine provided speed and flexibility exactly when it was needed.
