Imagine this: You're buying or have already bought shoes. The manufacturer claims they're made of genuine leather, but you're still unsure. The surest way is to watch them burn – this will damage the shoe. But how can you tell if the leather is genuine without damaging it?
1️⃣ Place your hand on the shoe for 15 seconds, then the other. Genuine leather will retain the warmth of your palm, while faux leather will remain cool and slightly damp.
2️⃣ Bend the shoe and look at the bend. Genuine leather will change color, and any creases will quickly heal. This is because leather is an elastic material. Faux leather, on the other hand, will not change color at the bend, as the artificial fibers absorb dye well, and any creases will remain visible for a few minutes.
3️⃣ Another way to check if the manufacturer is lying is to find the cut and notice if it is rough and if the fibers are visible. If it is smooth, or folded and protected, it is faux leather. Another indicator is the fabric base—this is where the faux leather is placed.
If the leather is embossed, the embossed pattern will be slightly smoother at the toe of the shoe in genuine leather, as genuine leather is quite elastic and stretches well when the toe is tightened. If the embossed pattern on the toe is as distinct as on other parts of the shoe, it's most likely a synthetic material.
Smooth genuine leather is never perfectly uniform. Slight surface variations, barely noticeable lines, and wrinkles on genuine leather vary in different places. In contrast, synthetic materials have a completely uniform and even surface across the entire surface.
Try not just one method, but all at once to increase your chances of making a mistake.
