In online discourse on language learning, it's common to distinguish between "traditional" methods and "natural" methods. The former are usually associated with school and poorer outcomes; the latter with self-learning and better outcomes.

But that dichotomy has been around for a long time. So long in fact that it seems to conflict with the notion that there has been progress in our knowledge of how language acquisition works.

In this video we'll try to see why that is, what it says about foreign language education and about the way we talk about it here on youtube.

Misc: In a community post, I asked viewers to propose names for the "language-learning guru" stand-in. The winner, "Choam Nomsky", was proposed by ‪@capteuan6517‬. I included the other names, proposed by @ohlookitsasnake2209, ‪@sillysillyme8150‬, and ‪@TheZicron007‬ , on the book cover for "How to learn a language as a zygote" (at 01:08 in the video). Thanks to all of them for playing along with my silly request! :-)
