This simple lathe tip is quick and cheap way to get the protection and holding power of copper in you lathe chuck. Metal lathe hack #6. Copper is probably the best material to use if you want to protect you work in the lathe chuck. It gives superior gripping power, it is a soft material and is very grabby (unlike brass). It needs to be thick enough to protect your work and clamp down onto. Here I am using copper rigid tubing to make the work protection.
