Cochlear Implant Users Perform World-Class Music at Sound Sensation | MED-EL
Watch six implant users prove that hearing loss doesn’t stop you from making incredible music at the grand finale of the Sound Sensation music festival.
There’s pianist Grzegorz Płonka, whose hearing loss went undiagnosed for years, but got into music school after receiving a cochlear implant. He’s joined onstage by renowned violinist Yury Revich.
Both oboist Russell Tyler and singer Laura Korhonen thought their careers were over when they developed hearing loss. But following cochlear implant surgery and a music rehabilitation, they’re back on top. Russell performs with Walter Auer, Shkelzen Doli, Tobias Lea, and Sebastian Bru from the Vienna Philharmonic, while Laura sings with her folk band Satuo.
Guitarist Roy Smith gave up music when his hearing declined, putting his instruments in the basement. But cochlear implants gave him new hope, and he has released his own album, Mended Spirit. Watch him perform with his wife Janet.
Following ear infections Jonas Pietersteiner, a talented singer, started using hearing aids. But the feedback affected his singing, so he went for a VIBRANT SOUNDBRIDGE middle ear implant. Now he finds it much easier to hear the fine details and the intonation in music. He is accompanied by pianist Christoph Traxler.
Since getting his cochlear implants, 12-year-old Chingiz Agibaev loves to sing and dance. Just watch him perform Rise Like a Phoenix, with Tom Neuwirth (Conchita Wurst).
