The possibility for the Foreign Legion to recruit candidates with a declared identity is an atypical provision with very old foundations.
Originally, this measure was intended to allow the emergency engagement, in the event of conflict, of foreign personnel who were not required to provide proof of their civil status. It made it possible to recruit foreign volunteers from the two great wars who came to shed their blood to defend France.
