Ozempic benefits and risks include improved blood sugar control and potential weight loss, balanced against common digestive side effects and important safety warnings. This video explains how Ozempic works, its approved uses for type 2 diabetes, why weight loss may occur, and what to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.

Ozempic is a once-weekly semaglutide injection approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It also has approved cardiovascular and kidney risk-reduction uses for certain adults with type 2 diabetes.

Weight loss can occur because semaglutide may reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying. However, Ozempic injection is not FDA-approved specifically for chronic weight management. Wegovy is the semaglutide product approved for weight management in eligible patients.

Common Ozempic side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. Important warnings include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, diabetic retinopathy complications, severe gastrointestinal reactions, dehydration-related kidney injury, serious allergic reactions, and low blood sugar when used with insulin or certain diabetes medications.

Ozempic carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors found in animal studies. It is unknown whether Ozempic causes these tumors in humans. Ozempic is contraindicated in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2.

Whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks depends on your diagnosis, medical history, treatment goals, other medications, and response to treatment. This video is designed to help you prepare for an informed discussion with your healthcare professional.
