Since the true enterprise features for Hyper-V are unlocked with the Datacenter edition, this is the version we will be installing. Before we get to the point of installing the Hyper-V role, we have to install Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Server Core as our OS platform and then install the role.
Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Server Core Installation
As mentioned earlier, choosing the edition of Windows Server or Hyper-V Server will change the installation process. Hyper-V Server is basically Windows Server Core with the Hyper-V role already installed, so simply installing Hyper-V server will have you up and running with the hypervisor. However, if you choose to utilize Windows Server Datacenter or Windows Server Standard, which will be the choice of most enterprises to utilize the advantages for Windows licensing, the process will involve installing the operating system first, then enabling the Hyper-V role.
Also, to be considered – when installing the Windows Server 2016 OS, you have the choice to install either the operating system alone which will be a Server Core installation. Server Core is a minimal installation with no graphical interface and no management tools. This is the preferred method to use in a production environment as opposed to choosing to install Desktop Experience which installs the normal GUI enabled Windows Server operating system. For the purposes of showing the installation process of a single standalone Hyper-V host, we will use the Server Core installation of Windows Server 2016 Datacenter.
