Refinements and Annotations on a Group Plot (Unlocking LaTeX Graphics, Ep. 68)
In this episode of Unlocking LaTeX Graphics, applied mathematician Tammy Kolda continues a two-part project recreating a figure from a highly cited machine learning paper using the PGFPLOTS group plots library. Starting from the Part 1 base of two vertically stacked plots with a shared x-axis, she refines the appearance by moving ticks outside the axis, removing top and right ticks, adjusting tick color, thickness, and length, and optionally clipping marker paths at the axis border. She then rebuilds the legend to match the original figure by making it horizontal, positioning it above the top plot, removing the border, and tuning matrix column spacing. Finally, she adds TikZ annotations spanning both plots, including L-shaped densely dotted arrows connecting endpoints between plots and a labeled callout pointing to a specific data point, and shares an Overleaf link in the show notes.
