What Matters Most: Lessons in Decision-Making from Jerry Seinfeld

In a Harvard Business Review interview in 2017, Jerry Seinfeld was asked if he was worried he’d run out of guests for his show comedians in “cars getting coffee.”

Jerry responds by saying:

“My feeling is that instead of digging down in the barrel of comedians, I want to start having people I like on again... …I’ll maintain the standard as opposed to the variety.”

The point is, whilst the interviewer assumed that theVARIETY of guests was the most important thing, Seinfeld is extremely clear that “maintaining the standard '' was of much higher value to him and therefore the show.

As soon as you know what’s really important, you cut out a lot of thinking or worrying, because you’ve already committed to a view point.

And we all have to do that in our work if we want to be able to actually make things.
