Lubka Kolessa's 1939 Electrola recording of Chopin's Waltz No.1 in E-Flat Major Op.18, 'Grande Valse Brillante'. This fine 78rpm transfer captures the full-bodied sonority and elegant refinement of the Ukranian pianist far better than commercially issued transfers. Her timing is direct and simple yet elegant (particularly noteworthy are transitions), and her deft articulation is never at the expense of tonal beauty. Line are elegantly crafted and there is a wonderful interplay between primary and secondary voices that is readily discernible.
