HOW TO USE THE MATCH MODES IN THE XMATCH FUNCTION
Welcome to Excel in a Minute!

The approximate match and exact match may already sound familiar to you.
But if you have not heard about it yet, these are the two match modes you can choose from in most Excel lookup functions. However, the X match function has four.
In this lesson, you will learn about these match modes you can choose from when using the X Match.
The X match function works just like the Match function, where it searches for a lookup value then returns an integer that indicates the position of the match found in the lookup array.
This runs on four arguments where only the first two are required.
In this video, we will focus on the third argument called match mode.
In X MATCH, there are four match modes that work even if your data is sorted or not.
The first mode is the exact match which is the default match mode. This prompts Excel to find the exact match of the lookup value. If a value is not found, it will return N A. To use this, input 0 as the third argument or just leave it blank. In this example, we searched for the product code and returned its rank among the top ten bestsellers of a café.
For the next match modes, we will use a simple example to observe their behaviors.
The exact match or next smaller item prompts Excel to get the exact match. Otherwise, it selects the next smaller item if the lookup value is not found. To use this, input -1 as the third argument. Here, we lookup for the code C3 which has no exact match on the data but there is a smaller item at number 9.
Next is the exact match or the next larger item. This prompts excel to get the exact match. Otherwise, it selects the next larger item if no match is found. To use this, input 1 as the third argument. Here, the x match formula found a larger item at number 6 since code C3 is not in the data.
Finally, the wildcard match. This prompts excel to search for a value that is only a part of the actual value listed in the data. To use this, input 2 as the third argument. Here, let’s have this as our lookup value. The formula with the wildcard match mode will return 1 since it has the smallest value with A on it.
