Comparing Raspberry Pi's Camera and 'noIR' Camera.
The official Raspberry Pi camera is actually sensitive to infrared radiation. It has an infrared light filter on the lens. Note that this is near-infrared not far-infrared light. You won't be able to use this as a heat camera.
They also sell a 'noIR' camera that comes without the infrared light filter.
If you are handy, you can remove the IR filter from the standard camera.
To test it, you will need an infrared light source. A TV remote control works well.
Note that this camera is sensitive to near infrared light - close to visible red light. This is not a heat camera. An 850nm ( 850 nano meter ) IR LED light will work well. An 940nm LED will also work, but not as well. A 940nm LED light would disturb animals less than an 850nm LED.
