So how does this device differ from the excellent (and much less expensive) Chromecast? The Miracast "mirrors" whatever is on a phone or tablet screen to a television whereas the Chromecast directly connects to video services like YouTube and Netflix to display video. The Chromecast also has very limited mirroring functions where the Miracast can mirror anything on the device screen.

If everything is compatible, the Miracast device does indeed work as advertised. It will take the display of a compatible Android or Windows 8.1 device and mirror what is being displayed on the screen to a larger one. It can largely work without configuration, which is good because whatever settings can be changed requires a television that's capable of passing remote control codes to the Miracast (mine doesn't).

Performance is so-so.. There is significant latency between what's displayed on the device and what appears on the television, meaning it's useless for gaming despite the claims in the marketing. A button push usually registers a half a second or more later on the big screen, so action games are especially problematic.

Video/movie performance isn't that great either. Because it's mirror a display and not directly connecting like the Chromecast, frame rates can be choppy and video quality suffers a bit. Audio works but is very 'noisy' on both the Android and Windows 8.1 devices I tested with it.

So what's it good for? Presentations mostly. Photo slideshows too. But I'd say the Chromecast is the better choice for video, and a higher end wireless HDMI transmitter is best for gaming.
