In this tutorial we will explain you how to install Ubuntu inside a virtual machine using VMware Workstation in your own pc.
First of all, you must go to Ubuntu website and download the latest image. Go to “download”. In this example we can download either the desktop version or the server version. I'll be picking the server version. So just click in “download” and “server”.
Now you can choose between two versions, I'm going with the version 15 which is the latest one, lets click “download”. The download is automatic, if it doesn't start coming you just click “download now”.
The Ubuntu Distribution Linux download is done, now you will open the VMware workstation.
Click on “Create a New Virtual Machine”. You must select “Installer disc image file”, we click “Browse” to select the downloaded file, I'm going to pick the Ubuntu 15 server.
Now click “open” and the click “next”.
Now you simply type your information: your full name, the user name and password, and click “next”.
So here in location i'm going to pick another location, I’ll use a different disk with some more disk space. This is the location where the virtual hardrive will be installed. Click “next.
Here you select the amount of size, how many gigabytes your virtual disk will have, so lets pick 3 gb and click “next”.
By clicking on “customize hardware”, you can select the amount of memory and the number of cores you wish to use. Just to show you, here you can pick the memory you wish, I'm keeping 1 gb and we can select the number of cores.
You also have some more configuration which I won’t be entering right now. Click “close” and now click “finish”.
Now VMware is booting the installation of Ubuntu.
This installation is very simple because Ubuntu have some automated facilities.
The installation is finished, after several minutes. Now you are in the login screen of Ubuntu.
To access Ubuntu you must type the username you chosed before, in my example I use the username john. And then type the password. That's it, you are now logged in your Ubuntu running under a VMware Workstation, a virtual machine is at your pc.
What is the basic difference between a virtual machine and a proffesional VPS server? In our pc a virtual machine has a local IP address, just like this one. But with a local IP address, you are unable to run some services because we don't have a public IP address. You can do a partnaping inside our router but some internet providers offer some limitations maybe some part blocks or something like that.
So if you close your VMware you can simply restart the virtual server just by clicking here this is your installation, yur recently installed Ubuntu that's it as you click here you have this option “Play virtual machine”.
Or else you can edit settings to increase ram increase the disk space for example. Here it is, you can simply change the amount of ram or the disk space whenever you wish.
Now to turn this machine on you must click “Play virtual machine” or else is this option here “Power On”.
Now you will be prompted, just click “yes” to enable the SATA storage.
Now our Ubuntu is booting, let just dismiss this message is about an update of VMware, lets click “Remind Me Later”.
So that's it, your Ubuntu is logged in, up and running.
