Final Blaster has its roots in the arcades with Namcos successful shooter, Bosconian, which was released in 1981. Published by Namco, it can be considered a successor for Bosconian. It was released for the PC-Engine in 1990. Final Blaster was later released on the Japanese Wii Virtual Console in 2008.
In Final Blaster, you take control of the starfighter, Blaster Mark II, or "Phoenix". Your mission is to save the Earth from the alien Bosconian forces. Collect red or blue power-ups that are dropped. Red powerups increase your firepower, while blue power-ups change your weapon. Hold down button II to charge your weapon, then release it for a powerful phoenix blast! The Select button allows you to increase or decrease the starfighters speed. Make sure to grab those power-ups as this game is difficult! There are seven stages to conquer. Each increasing in difficulty.
Final Blaster is your average vertical-scrolling shooter. It doesn't necessarily stand out from other shooters for the system, but doesn't suffer from problems in other areas. The graphics and sprites are colorful and detailed. The backgrounds use parallax scrolling for depth effect. And the soundtrack is good.
If you appreciate Namco and shooters, this game is a good addition for the library. Watch the video for some gameplay!
