Locking and Unlocking Objects in Illustrator: Managing Layers and Selections

To lock objects, simply click the edit column button (located to the right of the eye icon) in the Layers panel for the object or layer you wish to lock. You can also lock multiple items by dragging across multiple edit column buttons or by selecting the objects and choosing Object - Lock - Selection.
To unlock objects, click the lock icon in the Layers panel for the specific object or layer you want to unlock.
Here are some additional commands and methods to lock, unlock, hide, and show objects and layers in Illustrator:
Lock all objects above the selected object within the same layer by choosing Object - Lock - All Artwork Above.
Lock all layers except the one containing the selected item or group by choosing Object - Lock - Other Layers or using the Lock Others option in the Layers panel menu.
Lock all layers in the document by selecting all layers in the Layers panel and choosing Lock All Layers from the panel menu.
Unlock all objects in the document by choosing Object - Unlock All.
Unlock all objects within a group by selecting an unlocked and visible object within the group, then holding down Shift+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option (Mac OS) and choosing Object - Unlock All.
In addition, you can unlock objects directly from the canvas using the lock icon, provided you have enabled the preference setting under Preferences - Selection & Anchor Display - Select and Unlock Objects on Canvas.
Learn how to hide and show objects and layers in Illustrator using the eye icon in the Layers panel or by selecting objects and choosing Object - Hide - Selection. You can hide all objects above a selected object within a layer by choosing Object - Hide - All Artwork Above. To hide or show multiple items, drag across multiple eye icons or use the Hide Others and Show All commands in the Layers panel menu.
Deleting objects or layers is simple. Select the items you want to delete and press Backspace (Windows) or Delete, or choose Edit - Clear or Edit - Cut. In the Layers panel, you can click the Delete icon or drag the item name to the Delete icon to remove selected items. To delete hidden layers and their sublayers, choose Delete Hidden Layers from the Layers panel menu.
