Want the BASICS of Definite Integrals? START HERE!
To understand definite integrals in Calculus, it is best to start with basic examples. If a bug walks at a constant speed of 2 cm/sec for 10 sec, how far does it travel? Use distance = rate x time. This is the same as the area of the rectangular region under the graph of the constant velocity function v=f(t)=2. What if the velocity is linear? What if it is quadratic? We use the definite integral symbol to represent the answer, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus can be used to evaluate it. The area can also be approximated by Riemann sums, which can be evaluated in Wolfram Mathematica.
