animate using gimp -This is video show you how to make an animation using Gimp image editor and a plug in called Gap.

*Update: check out http://shop.soliduscode.com/ as a low investment for all your animation needs! The application is called Penimation and its straight forward and supports onion skipping, layers, and unlimited frames.
The animation process is really just creating a bunch of layers in gimp and changing the images in a logical way to give the appearance of motion. Then you can test out the animation, to see if you like it, using Filters, Animation, Playback.

Finally, after you like what you see, you can then use Video, Split Images to Frames to create convert every single layer to its own separate image file (*.xcf) and then use Video, Master encoder to generate a video ( AVI ) file.
