This story follows the captivating journey of a courageous and adventurous individual, as he embarks on an exploration into the world of monowheel riding. Intrigued by this unconventional mode of transportation, he decides to delve into the realm of monowheels a couple of years ago. Without delving deep into extensive research, he simply follows his heart's desire and acquires one of the more affordable models available – a low-power, low-speed monowheel with a limited range.
The process of learning to ride the monowheel proves to be a challenging and arduous one for our intrepid protagonist. It takes him several days of dedicated practice, and even then, it is only after a moment of desperation, accompanied by a glass of cognac, that he manages to find his balance. Along this journey, he endures the physical toll of numerous falls, resulting in bloodied palms, knees, and elbows, as well as a fair share of bruises. Adding insult to injury, he must contend with the curious and often baffling remarks of onlookers as he glides by.
Nevertheless, persistence and determination prevail, and our protagonist eventually reaches a point where riding the monowheel becomes second nature. The once-challenging task of steering and maintaining balance fades into the background, as his body instinctively takes over. It is in these moments that he experiences the sheer joy and exhilaration of gliding effortlessly on the monowheel, as if it were an extension of himself.
While the concept of electric unicycles is a relatively recent phenomenon, our protagonist observes that their basic design has remained relatively unchanged. A self-balancing motor-wheel forms the core, complete with pedals, batteries, and an electronics unit. Similar to segways and hoverboards, the monowheel automatically balances itself in the forward-backward directions, relieving the rider of the constant need to focus on balance. Contrary to popular belief, riding a monowheel does not demand constant attention to maintaining balance. Thanks to electronic assistance, the rider can effortlessly navigate at moderate speeds, reserving the need for manual balance adjustments mostly for ultra-low speeds and crowded pedestrian areas.
The advantages of a monowheel over electric scooters quickly become apparent. Its compact size and portability enable easy access to public institutions and facilities, as it can be conveniently maneuvered alongside the rider. In contrast, scooters often face restrictions within the city. Moreover, the monowheel's superior maneuverability makes it the preferred choice for conquering typical urban obstacles such as curbs, tram rails, and steep ramps. Even a simple technique allows the rider to effortlessly conquer curbs up to 20 centimeters high, a feat unmatched by traditional electric scooters. Additionally, the average monowheel boasts greater power and performance compared to its scooter counterparts.
One notable aspect is the contrasting attitudes toward monowheel riders compared to scooter riders. The general perception of monowheel riders seems to be more positive and accepting, in stark contrast to the skepticism and disdain often directed at scooter users. This disparity creates a distinct sense of camaraderie among monowheel enthusiasts, fostering a friendly atmosphere within the community. However, it also leads to a division between the "Pensioners," who prefer a more leisurely and cautious riding style, often sticking to bike paths and sidewalks, and the "Racers," adrenaline-seeking riders who make the roads their domain, reaching impressive speeds that can exceed 60-70 km/h. Despite their differences, both groups find common ground within Telegram groups dedicated to monowheel enthusiasts, where they engage in amicable discussions and occasionally organize separate rides based on their preferred riding style.
Riding a monowheel instills a sense of empowerment and expands the boundaries of the city. As our protagonist immerses himself in the experience, he discovers that it is possible to traverse the entirety of the urban landscape within half a day, unveiling hidden corners and unexplored paths that would have remained unnoticed from the confines of a car. The monowheel, with its distinctive characteristics and indescribable allure, allows our protagonist to embrace a thrilling and unique form of urban exploration.
