Understanding non-stationarity is becoming essential in modern hydrological modelling and flood risk assessment. Traditional rainfall–runoff models assume that hydrological processes are stationary, meaning their statistical properties remain constant over time. However, due to climate change, land use change, and water resources development, this assumption is increasingly being challenged.

In this video, I explain what non-stationarity means in the context of rainfall–runoff modelling, why it matters, how to detect it, and what engineers can do to address it in practice.
