Step 1: Browser Safety Check (Chrome or Edge)
(Why: outdated browser + leaked passwords = easy breach.)
Chrome path:
Settings → Privacy & security → Safety Check → Check now
If it flags “Update Chrome”, click it.
If it shows compromised passwords, hit Review and change the big ones (email, banking, Microsoft/Google).
Edge
Then Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Security → ensure Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is On.
Step 2: Block sketchy apps with reputation-based protection
(Why: kills malware and junkware before it runs.)
Path:
Open Windows Security → App & browser control → Reputation-based protection settings → Turn ON:
Check apps and files
SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge
Potentially unwanted app blocking → check Block apps and Block downloads
Step 3: Turn on Ransomware Protection (Controlled Folder Access)
(Why: stops unauthorized encryption of Documents/Pictures/Desktop.)
Path:
Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → scroll to Ransomware protection → Manage ransomware protection → Controlled folder access ON.
(Optional) Click Protected folders to confirm your Documents, Pictures, Desktop are listed.
