In this edition of the Observatory of Contemporary Economics, Professor Ricardo Carneiro hosts Karin Costa Vazquez (Center for China and Globalization) and Marco Crocco (President of BDMG) for a "reality check" on the sustainable transition. Karin Vazquez details the ABDE 2030 Plan and differentiates the true "sustainable transition" (which includes social and governance aspects) from the mere "green transition." Marco Crocco is forceful in diagnosing the ESG crisis and the phenomenon of greenwashing, arguing that the private sector alone will never assume the risks necessary for climate adaptation. The economist warns of a "blind spot" in the Brazilian debate: while we focus on deforestation (crucial), we forget that the next major emissions bottleneck is in cities (transport and housing). The panel concludes by dissecting the contradictions of a model where banks promise to finance the green future while protecting their fossil assets.
A sober analysis that hits the nail on the head: without robust public policy and financial system reform, the climate agenda risks becoming just another asset bubble.
