"Here's a super rare treat for Motown and Miracles fans... Claudette Robinson as a solo artist.

Recorded in 1963, "Father Dear" rocks a bit more with the blues than pop; there is a lot more R&B here than would be heard in later years at Motown - and Claudette handles it as if she was born to sing this very song. As good as it is (and it's very good) it was held in the can until 1994's "Smokey Robinson and the Miracles- The 35th Anniversary Collection" box set.

I've read that Claudette may have resisted being in the spotlight, the focal point of the group, even for a 2:35 record. In this regard, Claudette reminds me of Karen Carpenter. Karen had this beautiful, amazing voice- absolute perfection - but she initially resisted the push by her brother and record company to move out front, away from the security of her drum kit. Karen thought of herself as a drummer who just happened to sing. She didn't even realize her gift. Maybe Claudette was of similar mind. Did she feel she was best singing with the group as opposed to having solo outings? Fortunately, we DID get to hear her solo on the fantastic Miracles' LP, "I'll Try Something New," with "He Don't Care About Me"; and later, on the "Miracles Doin' Mickey's Monkey" LP with a cover of the Orlons' hit, "The Wah Watusi."

For my money though, when I heard this, "Father Dear," I felt almost like I was "cheated." Or SOMEBODY has been cheated, because this is recording of such sublime beauty and quality. I love the minor-key setting of this - it fits the mood of the song very well; bittersweet. There is the very real theme of the Daddy's Girl who comes to the day when she meets the person who will be taking her from the family nest, and off on a life of her own. It's a heartfelt performance, this by Claudette. It's hard to believe that there would have been many a daughter - and father - who wouldn't have related to this as a real-life setting.

Well, the record business is an interesting one. Sometimes, there are recordings that one would believe would have been automatic choices for release, but we can never know the behind-the-scenes conditions and reasons for why this record or that record didn't receive a release. Things that a fan hears as a hit may have had a completely different feel in the context of the times when it was done. But I'm glad we DID get to hear this at last."
