Cēsis to Riga — evening drive home through Vidzeme | Latvia POV
The return leg of a long day, leaving Cēsis old town just after 5pm and rolling into central Riga around 7. About 90km, 1 hour 35 minutes in real time.
The light goes from full afternoon sun to the long flat shadows you get this far north in May. The road is the A2, southwest from Cēsis through Sigulda and the Vidzeme forest belt, then the Riga ring road into the centre.
Two long stretches: the open A2 between Cēsis and Sigulda, and the forest section between Sigulda and Riga. The forest belt is what most of inland Latvia looks like once you're out of the cities. Pine and birch. The occasional lake. A farmhouse every few kilometres.
