The Place Value Way for Subtraction
At home you may hear your second grader talk about "the place value way" and this is a second grade addition and subtraction regrouping strategy. Today, I am going to take you through the subtraction side of "the place value way".
The place value way helps students build a foundational understanding that three digit numbers are composed of hundreds, tens, and ones. Students learn compose and decompose ones, tens, and hundreds as they need to successfully add and subtract three digit numbers.
2.NBT.A.1 Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones.
2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1,000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
2.NBT.B.9 Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.
