To create carpet over the stairs follow the step
1. Select the edge of the stairs to move it to the middle as shown.
2. Then select the other edge and move it in the middle as shown.
3. Now group the middle part.
4. Select the extrusion tool or just the extrusion extension to extrude the middle stairs.
5. Apply the texture effect.
6. To change direction make a face over the stairs landing.
7.
