Masi had never swum in the ocean before when his boat to Australia began to sink. He tasted salt water for the first time when he and twenty-eight other refugees went into the ocean, tragically only Masi and three other people survived. His uncle was among those who drowned.
Masi was stranded in the Timor Sea, holding on to a piece of timber for 16 hours before he was rescued by fisherman.
Now, Masi is a lifeguard and surf guide at a wave pool in Melbourne, He also runs a painting and renovation company employing other refugees from Afghanistan.
