THE SOPRANOS is a black comedy played in the foul-mouthed street language of New Jersey hoodlums. It is far funnier than any sitcom, but the laughter it elicits doesn't come from one-liners but from a deeper recognition of the screaming little baby inside every grownup. The show's mordantly funny creator, David Chase, spills out uncharacteristic but jewel-encrusted madness, making you laugh and cry, while at the same time wondering at his brilliant storytelling and perfect ear for dialogue.
THE CONCEPT: HBO uses its institutional tagline, "It's Not TV. It's HBO," to define or differentiate itself and explain its relevancy to its target audience. This hilarious montage highlighs some outstanding character exchanges from cable television's most successful series. Anyone offended by obscene language should get the hell out of Jersey!
