Microsoft Excel Tutorial: What changed in Excel charting in the Ribbon.
Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In today's episode, we'll be discussing charting in Excel 2007. This is a question sent in by one of our viewers, Lauren. She wants to know if there are any new features in Excel 2007 when it comes to creating charts. Well, while there are no new chart types added, the charting engine has been dramatically changed to allow for more interesting and visually appealing charts.
Let's take a look at an example. In Excel 2003, we have a typical chart that hasn't changed much in the last 15 years. But in Excel 2007, with just one click (or Alt+F1), we can create a chart that looks much better. The background is no longer gray and we have the option to choose from different chart types in the gallery. This makes it easier to find the right chart for our data. We can even customize the chart by displaying numbers in thousands, which was a bit hidden in the old Excel.
However, when it comes to chart types, Excel 2007 still offers the same 73 types as before. They didn't have the chance to add any new types. But one interesting addition in Excel 2007 is in the area of conditional formatting. We can now create in-cell data bars or color scales to visualize our data. This makes it easier to see the largest or smallest numbers in our data set. So while there are no new chart types, the charts in Excel 2007 definitely look a lot better and offer some new visualization options.

Lorin asks if there is anything new in Excel 2007 charts. While Microsoft rewrote the charting engine in Office 2007, you still have the same basic chart types. However, there are new data visualization tools in conditional formatting that allow you to add bar charts to every cell. Episode 737 discusses these new features.
