Idumbasura was the chief of the demons Surapadman, Bhanugopan, Gajamukasura, and Singamugana, who were destroyed by Murugan. After they were destroyed by Murugan, Idumbasura began to worship Shiva. Idumbasura, who was a great devotee of Shiva, was assisted by his wife Idumbasura. The place where they stayed was called "Idumba Vanam". (Currently, this place is 16 km from Tiruthurai Poondi). In this situation, Agasthiyar asked Lord Muruga for the Shivamalai and Thimalai, which are the forms of Shiva, for his worship. Lord Muruga also gave them. Agasthiyar used to keep them in a place called Poorchavanam in Kedar and worship them. In this situation, it became necessary to leave the mountains there and go to Pothikai. When Idumban was wandering in the forest, he saw Agasthiyar staying in the Courtala mountain. He said that he wanted to receive the mercy of Lord Muruga. Agasthiyar, who understood his high intention, even though he was an asura guru, brought the Shivamalai and Thimalai in Kedar to the Pothikai while chanting the six-letter mantra "Saravana Bhava" and the mantra "Arokara" which removes sins. He said that he would get a vision.
Idumban and Idumbai went there and prayed to Lord Shiva to lift the mountain. Then a brahmadhandam (rod) appeared. Nagas also came there for eight days. He tied them like a rope to the brahmadhandam, placed the mountains on it and carried them like a kavadi. He lowered the load at a place called Thiruvavinankudi on the way to Podhikai. After resting, he could not lift it again. A boy was playing on the top of the Shiva mountain. Seeing his beauty, Idumban thought that he was a god. He asked him to come down from the mountain. He refused and argued, "This is the mountain where I will stay." The two had an argument. The two started fighting.
The elder brother who protected his younger brother: When Idumban tried to fight with Lord Murugan in the form of a boy, Lord Ganesha came to protect him. However, Murugan could not Since he had obtained the fruit he wanted, and since he was angry with him, he hid his own form and took the form of a serpent and fought with Idumbana. This Vinayaka appears on a serpent near the Idumbana shrine on the way to the hill temple. He places his right foot on the serpent's head. He is called "Sarpa Vinayaka". At the foot of the hill temple is the 'Padavinayakar'. It is believed that one should worship him before climbing the mountain. There is the foot of Murugan behind this deity. The sight of these two Vinayakars is also special here.
The boy lightly hit Idumbana with the stick in his hand, but Idumbana could not bear the blow and fell down and died. Idumbana cried out. Idumbana, who firmly believed that no one else could be worthy of killing her husband, who had taught archery to the demons, and who had defeated the demons, fell at the boy's feet. The boy appeared as Murugan on a peacock and woke Idumbana up, saying, "Idumbana! You should stand in the middle of this mountain. Devotees should bring me worship items like you as Kavadi. They should worship me first. Those who worship you will get the benefit of worshipping me."
